The most popular dog foods in the United States are not only high in protein, but also high in vitamins, minerals and fiber, according to a new study.
It is not clear why dogs have such a high need for these nutrients, the researchers said.
In the study, published online today in the journal Science, scientists examined the nutritional needs of 10 different breeds of dogs.
The study found that the top three categories of foods — beef, chicken and pork — were by far the most popular for dogs.
All three of these diets have about three times as much protein as dog foods.
They’re also full of calcium, iron, vitamin B-12, manganese and vitamin D, according the authors.
The bottom three categories — rice, pasta and potatoes — are also relatively low in protein.
The authors said the dogs in the study were “somewhat deficient in these essential nutrients.”
The study also found that dogs are more likely to get food allergies and that they are more sensitive to certain types of bacteria.
The researchers noted that some breeds are especially sensitive to wheat allergies, which have been linked to an increased risk of food allergies.
However, the study does not say what type of allergies dogs have, said study lead author Kristine Sutter, a veterinary toxicologist with the National Veterinary Medical Association.
It was possible that the pets with the highest needs for nutrients were also the most sensitive, or that the animals were being fed a diet that was high in other types of allergens, she said.
For example, the dogs that were most sensitive to food allergies tended to be the ones that were also prone to a wide range of gastrointestinal infections.
These include diverticulitis, a bacterial infection that causes ulcers and inflammation of the intestines.
This condition is often seen in pets that are in heat and have had diarrhea.
It also appears that dogs who are also susceptible to a range of bacterial infections are more susceptible to allergies.
In fact, the animals with the most severe allergies tended have the highest rates of bacterial vaginosis, a condition that causes inflammation of their urethra and the urinary tract.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recommended that veterinarians take certain medications in dogs to prevent these infections.
The dogs that had the most complex gastrointestinal conditions, such as the canine ileostomy, were also more likely than others to have a high prevalence of food allergy.
This includes dogs that have gastritis, a process that causes a narrowing of the stomach.
Gastritis is a condition in which the stomach and the intestine are in close proximity, said Dr. Mark E. Brown, a gastroenterologist at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University.
He said that when it comes to allergies, this could be a good sign because there are more bacteria present in the gut than the rest of the body.
“This is not just a food allergy, it’s a whole set of other conditions that the dog is vulnerable to,” Brown said.
He also noted that allergies in dogs can be very complex and not just one or two symptoms.
“If the dog can’t eat what they’re allergic to, they’re going to have some type of gastrointestinal infection,” Brown explained.
Dr. Laura T. Johnson, a pediatrician and an allergist with the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine, said she was surprised that dogs did not seem to have allergies.
“This is a completely new field,” she said, adding that it would be interesting to find out whether allergies in some of the breeds were more severe.
But Brown said there could be an association between allergies and a variety of other health problems.
“There’s a lot of potential here, so it’s really important to look at it with a large population,” Brown added.
